Tom Hanks is arguably one of the top actors in Hollywood and respected even among veteran actors who’ve been around for longer. Hanks is also a filmmaker and started his career in the early 1980s with movies like big, Turner & Hooch and Splash. He went on to star in a variety of dramatic and comedic roles including a number of romantic comedies.
Hanks collaborates frequently with Steven Spielberg and often does voice work. In particular, he is often recognized as the voice of Woody in the Toy Story franchise. Hanks is the fourth highest grossing actor in North America with $4.6 billion any grosses more than $9.2 billion worldwide.
He has won a number of awards throughout the years including Academy Awards, People’s Choice Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, Golden Globe Awards and more. In 2016, he received the Presidential Medal Of Freedom from Barack Obama.
Splash is definitely a silly concept for a movie, but in 1984, Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah were cast in a movie from a brand-new studio, Touchstone, which would soon become a powerhouse in Hollywood.
However, contrary to what you might expect from this type of movie, it proved to do well at the box office with approximately $70 million in receipts and then even went on to score critical acclaim. The movie has had quite a bit of staying power as well as it is still watchable after all these years. Many critics attribute the movie success to Tom Hanks and his ability to deliver a terrific comedy movie.
However, Daryl Hannah as a mermaid certainly didn’t hurt the film. Ron Howard also had a directorial role. Touchstone was created by Disney to allow them to release adult fare without an impact on the Disney brand.
